Ed Merola, bass guitar,
has been playing music since the fourth grade. It started when his
music teacher talked him out of playing the drums. After a quick
look into the instrument closet, he picked the beat up old tuba
which he played from that point on all the way through high school.
When Ed was about 15, a friend talked him into playing the bass
guitar. He picked it up and started playing in the high school jazz
band, along with tuba in the concert band, and singing in the chorus
and the jazz choir.
At 16, Ed started a band called the Carnival Dogs of which Freeplay
members Dean Christiano and Joe Podsiadlo later became members. With
the Carnival Dogs, Ed had the opportunity to play at Toad's Place
and The New Haven Street Festival as well as perform as the "house
band" For WPLR's Smith & Barber morning show for several years. He
has shared the stage with acts such as Max Creek, Blue Oyster Cult,
Joe Bonamassa, Shakedown and Riders on the Storm to name a few.
Over the last 16 years, Ed has played in other bands such as Z-Plan,
Madhat, Wasco 5.0 and now Freeplay. You may often hear him say
"Without my music, I'd go insane." |
