JIM PINO

Jim started playing the Alto Saxophone in 4th grade, and then switched to Baritone Saxophone in high school, where he was selected in the All-District Jazz Band playing bari sax. He also sang lead vocals in a rock band, and played alto and soprano sax in a fusion band during his high school years. Studies and college football limited his music time to playing his alto at open mics and small gigs in college. The demands of starting a construction business and attending graduate school after college caused him to temporarily "retire" from music. Working long hours while suffering "lack-of-musical-performance" anxiety, he decided to teach himself the harmonica. The portability of the "blues harp" allowed him to practice to the radio in his truck, during his commutes. Soon after, he joined a band with his blues harp and voice, and eventually dusted off his horns!

Since then he has performed in New Haven and Fairfield counties in several bands (Battered Huz-Band, BarBeerians, Old Skool). He's also been seen sitting in with his harmonica with likes of Larry McCray, George Baker, Morris Trent, and Lou West. His talent also prompted a New York band to ask him to join them in playing sax and harp, at the 2003 Woodstock Festival Mega-Ride in honor of the victims of 9/11. His love of music drives him to play, learn, and study with several of the areas best musicians, whenever he can. He now focuses primarily on Tenor Sax, Harmonica, and Vocals with FREEPLAY. On stage, he's been known for talking you out of your seat and on to the dance floor.
